Product/IP solution Roadmap is plan/vision for the product with features/functionalities/capabilities bundled in multiple series of releases over a period of time. It is a strategic document, with a typical 3-year time horizon. It does not detail the content of each release, and may not mention minor releases.

Main Description

Product Strategist shall be responsible for preparation product roadmap. It is derived from product strategy, technology/platform roadmaps, partner roadmaps, and any other major events/inputs affecting the product. It gives direction to product development teams and acts as input for Release planning activity. Roadmap can be in two forms one for Internal purposes and other for External communications. Content wise Roadmap mainly includes Major releases with highlighting features, timelines, target markets, and themes.

The external roadmap is a Sales collateral used to communicate with Customers/Clients, Partners, Analysts etc. about strategy around the IP solution and seek feedback. This helps in further refining the product strategy and roadmap. Internal roadmaps help in defining the scope for specific product releases. Internal roadmaps also help in giving direction for Release planning, budget planning and resource planning activities.
